What Is Chiropractic Healthcare?
Chiropractic is the third largest healing profession in the world after medicine and dentistry.

Chiropractors are expert health care professionals who treat musculo-skeletal problems to release muscle spasm and nerve interference, relieving pain and improving mobility. Chiropractic is suitable for all age groups, including babies, pregnant women and the elderly. Treatment will be directed according to a patient’s age, needs and diagnosis.

Chiropractic personalises care to help create the potential for well being and improve the quality of life, rather than just focussing on illness.

The benefits of chiropractic care include pain relief, tissue healing and good function. It may require different amounts of time to achieve each of these goals, depending on the problem.

Chiropractic Adjustments
Research indicates that the risks associated with long-term use of pain relieving drugs are much higher than those associated with chiropractic care.

Chiropractic is one of the safest and most effective forms of treatment available for nerve, spine and muscle associated problems, aimed at restoring and maintaining normal structure, joint, muscle and nervous system function.

Chiropractic examination identifies restricted joints, whether they are painful or not. Adjustments (controlled forces) specifically applied to joints can restore function. Barriers to ‘normal function’ include muscle spasm, swelling, scar tissue and pain.

Adjustments help relieve pain as well as restore and maintain normal movement, biomechanics and function. The controlled force of adjustments safely generates the energy needed to overcome restrictions to restore range of motion, flexibility, stability, strength and coordination.

Restoring Function of Joints
Chiropractic helps minimise pain and maximise function by use of adjustments, exercise and other methods.

Improving function is the key to long term pain relief. Joints that have good function are not painful, perform better and are less likely to be injured or degenerate, i.e. Arthritis.

Failure to restore function means any pain relief is temporary and increases the risk of chronic pain. Decreased function can lead to injury and pain.

Motion and Nutrition of Discs and Joints
A joint that can’t move, can’t nourish itself. Maintaining good motion is critical to the survival of discs and joints.

Because discs and cartilage have no blood supply an exchange of nutrients is necessary to keep discs and joints healthy. Movement pumps nutrients in and waste products out. Lack of movement may lead to poor nutrition and disc degeneration.

The discs in the spine live because of movement. Chiropractors find joints that are restricted and by adjustments, help restore and maintain normal motion and nutrition.

Your First Visit
You will be asked for details of your medical history and previous injuries. Your chiropractor will then perform an Orthopaedic and Neurological examination to make a thorough assessment. X-rays may be recommended if visual information is required to confirm diagnosis, these are taken on site (Haverhill & Cambridge) and can be done while you wait. Once all the information and analysis is complete, your chiropractor will discuss diagnosis and treatment plan.

Treatment - What to Expect
Your chiropractor will usually perform precise and gentle adjustments of the spine or other joints. You may experience a little stiffness or aching; particularly after your first treatment. Acute, recent
conditions often respond to treatment very quickly whilst a long-standing or chronic conditions may need up to 6 - 12 treatments or more. The average number of treatments is 6 visits; less if a condition is treated early. Your chiropractor may recommend periodic check-ups to maintain improvement and prevent recurrences.

Your GP and Private Health Cover
Many GP’s refer patients to us; in some areas this is available on the NHS.  However, you do not have to contact your GP in order to make an appointment with a chiropractor. Private health companies will cover the cost of your treatment. If you have private health insurance, please make our receptionist aware on your first visit so that you can be advised of the procedures.

How Else Can we Help?
In addition to advice and patient education, we offer a number of ancillary services to complement chiropractic treatment.

Ultra-Sound Therapy
This involves ultrasound waves which stimulate tissue repair, relieve muscle spasm, reduce inflammation and free up calcified or ‘stiff’ joints. It is particularly useful in joint sprains associated with sports injuries.

DEXA Bone Density Scanner
Used in many hospitals and medical establishments, we were the first chiropractors in the UK to buy this equipment. The G4 forearm scanner is the latest technology to detect weakness in the bone structure leading to osteoporosis. The scan takes just two minutes. Bone loss occurs gradually from age 30 and accelerates from age 50 but there are many contributing factors that can increase the rate of bone loss. Early detection of bone weakness is preferable because there is so much that can be done naturally to help, but it can be treated at any age with medication. We offer scans for people aged 20 to 90 and monitor people taking medication. A staggering 1 in 2 women and 1 in 5 men will sustain a fracture after age 50 due to bone weakness. Because of these statistics many other countries offer bone mineral density scans as routine! For more information go to:

NB: A bone density scan is not suitable for pregnant ladies and it is best to wait until two years after childbirth to obtain an accurate reading.

Power-Assisted Micro Manipulation (PAMM)
(Based at Haverhill)
PAMM is a treatment consisting of a ‘bionic’ handset powered by compressed air, which rapidly massages the joints of the spine by repetitively and effortlessly moving up and down the spine to release the individual joints and restore mobility. Usually, the patient experiences a general feeling of wellbeing and sometimes the sensation of feeling taller! This works well to restore movement to ‘fixed’ vertebrae, which then relieves pain.

Roller-Table
(Based at Cambridge)
The roller table consists of two sets of soft rubber wheels, which move gently up and down the spine whilst the patient relaxes. This is a gentle form of traction to which subtle vibration can be introduced at a controlled level if required. This helps to restore movement and release tension from the spine. So relaxing that the patient often falls asleep!

Pneumatic Traction
The latest method to relieve stress and tension in the neck, using an expanding air cushion. The gentlest form of pain relief so that even the most apprehensive patient can gain some relief from neck problems.

Therapeutic Massage
Our physical therapist can provide a superb massage for the relief of tension, stress and muscle spasm.

X-Rays While You Wait
We have x-ray facilities on site, so they can be done quickly and efficiently. This assists the chiropractor to make their diagnosis and demonstrate to the patient what may be causing their problem, enabling a discussion on future treatment and care.
